Varithena

Treating Larger Veins In The Thigh And Leg

The big advantage of Varithena is the ability to treat the larger twisted veins that would otherwise have to be excised. This treatment corrects reflux in the saphenous veins and reduces the appearance of bulging veins, as well as reducing discomfort from throbbing, itchy, achy, and painful vein disease reported by many patients. Best of all, this treatment will leave your legs looking and feeling better. It is typically used specifically with the great saphenous vein and surrounding veins. Patients with varicose veins, with or without pain or discomfort, are typically good candidates for this treatment.

What Is Varithena?

Varithena™ is a polidocanol injectable foam for the corrective treatment of the larger malfunctioning veins in the thigh and leg associated with venous insufficiency. It is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment that does not require any incisions or general anesthesia. It is done by Dr. Medina in the comfort of our treatment rooms usually within 60 minutes.

Triangle Vein Clinic uses it to treat a wide range of varicose veins, including tortuous (twisted) veins, veins above and below the knees, veins of varying diameters, and veins that may have been treated with other methods. However, Varithena™ does not treat all forms of varicose veins which is why your vein consultation is critical before any form of treatment is decided upon. Dr. Medina, a board-certified vascular surgeon, will work with you to determine the required or best treatment for you.

How Does The Treatment Work?

First, you will receive local anesthesia to numb the skin entry site on your leg or thigh, but no additional anesthesia is required. No incisions are required. A small needle will be used to access the vein to infuse the foam medication under ultrasound guidance and monitored carefully as it is distributed slowly throughout the affected vein until the vein constricts. As the foam enters the problem area of your varicose vein, it causes the vein to collapse. When it collapses, the blood will flow into a nearby healthy vein. Ultrasound imaging technology will be used during the procedure to pinpoint the exact location for treatment. Once the procedure is complete, we will wrap this area of your leg with bandages.

You should expect the procedure to take 45-60 minutes, although we advise our patients to plan to be at Triangle Vein Clinic for an hour and a half. You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure, and you should not drive the rest of the day.

Like most patients, you should see a noticeable improvement in your symptoms and appearance following the procedure. You may notice some bruising.

After Your Varithena Treatment

The day of the procedure you should walk for 10 minutes every hour until bedtime, otherwise your leg should be elevated. Leave the wrappings/bandages in place until the next morning. Most patients may resume some activities on the same day but definitely should avoid heavy exercise for one week, then you can resume regular activity. After the procedure, you will need to wear graduated compression stockings for one month for added support while your legs fully heal. Avoid inactivity for a month. It is important to keep your legs active as they recover. Walking is great.
