VNUS Closure®

How VNUS Closure®

Works

The procedure begins with local anesthesia applied to numb the skin entry site on your leg and along the treatment path. A special catheter is inserted into the vein through a small incision just below the knee. The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy in 20-second bursts to provide controlled levels of heat to contract the vein walls, causing them to collapse and seal shut. The doctor will use ultrasound imaging technology to know where to guide the catheter. One small section of the vein is treated at a time.

You should expect the procedure to take 45 to 60 minutes, although we advise our patients to plan to be at Triangle Vein Clinic for one and a half hours. You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure, and you should not drive the rest of the day.

Like most patients, you should see a noticeable improvement in your symptoms and appearance following the procedure. About 98 percent of patients who have been treated with VNUS Closure® say they would recommend it to a friend or family member with similar leg vein problems.

Why Use Ultrasound?

Ultrasound and VNUS Closure® working together makes the entire process effective and successful. Dr. Medina relies on ultrasound to give him a map underneath the surface of your leg. This allows him to precisely treat the exact problem veins in real time. Ultrasound is totally noninvasive with absolutely no radiation. Ultrasound is remarkable imaging technology that uses sound waves to capture images of veins and arteries.

Following Your VNUS Closure® Procedure

The day of the procedure you should walk for 10 minutes every hour until bedtime, otherwise elevate your leg. Leave the wrappings/bandages in place until the next morning. After consulting with Dr. Medina, you should be able to return to your normal activities within one day. To give your legs additional support you need to wear graduated compression stockings for at least a month (many athletes wear stockings during training and exercise). You will need to avoid vigorous exercise for one week, then you can resume a regular exercise activity. Avoid inactivity for a month. If you sit for long periods of time for work, stand up for five minutes every 25 minutes or so. If you stand for long periods of time for work, sit and elevate your legs for five minutes every 25 minutes if possible.
