ClariVein

A Nonsurgical Endovascular Treatment

ClariVein® uniquely combines mechanical agitation and the delivery of a chemical sclerosant to irritate the lining of the vein thereby sealing it. While Sclerotherapy works extremely well with small surface veins (spider veins), ClariVein® is useful for the treatment of the greater and lesser saphenous veins. The reason Triangle Vein Clinic offers more types of treatment for venous insufficiency and varicose veins is that no two people are alike. Venous insufficiencies can present in varying degrees of severity. Having all the most effective treatments for every form of venous reflux disease and varicose veins is just one of the reasons Triangle Vein Clinic is the preferred choice for so many healthcare professionals.

The ClariVein® Procedure

The ClariVein catheter is inserted into the vein using a pin sized entry through the skin. Your vein specialist will numb the injection site, but no additional anesthesia is necessary. The catheter tip is positioned near the saphenofemoral or saphenopopliteal junction. ClariVein uses a special catheter with a rotating tip that is two to three times thinner than the devices used in radiofrequency. The motorized handle rotates the catheter tip during pullback, creating vessel spasm to block forward flow and concentrate the targeted infusion of liquid sclerosant. During the procedure, you will feel a non-painful ‘buzzing’ in the area being treated. Ultrasound imaging technology will be used during the procedure allowing Dr. Medina to precisely target the problem vein. Once the vein constricts, the catheter is removed from the vein. We will wrap this area of your leg with compression bandages.

You should expect the procedure to take 45-60 minutes, although we advise our patients to plan to be at Triangle Vein Clinic for an hour and a half. You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure, and you should not drive the rest of the day.

Like most patients, you should see a noticeable improvement in your symptoms and appearance following the procedure.

After Your Corrective Vein Treatment

The day of the procedure you should walk for 10 minutes every hour until bedtime, otherwise keep your leg elevated. Leave the wrappings/bandages in place until the next morning. After consulting with Dr. Medina, you should be able to return to your normal activities within one day. To give your legs additional support you need to wear graduated compression stockings for at least a month (many athletes wear stockings during training and exercise). You will need to avoid vigorous exercise for one week, then you can resume a regular exercise activity. Avoid inactivity for a month. Walking is a great form of exercise while recovering.
