Sclerotherapy / Laser
Sclerotherapy is a treatment for spider and some varicose veins that involves using a fine needle to inject a solution directly into the problematic veins. Laser treatment delivers heat directly to the targeted veins. Both processes lead to the vein turning to scar tissue and fading from view. Blood circulation continues through other healthy veins.
Both treatments usually require no special preparation; however, you should not shave or apply lotion to the areas being treated the day before or the day of treatment. Let your doctor know of any routine medications you may be taking. It is best if you are well hydrated before your visit. We recommend drinking 4-6 additional glasses of water the day before treatment.
What to Expect During Treatment
You can expect the procedure itself to take approximately 30-60 minutes although, we advise patients to plan on spending about two hours at Triangle Vein Clinic. Several visits are usually necessary. Spider veins usually clear within six to eight weeks, and varicose veins clear in eight to 12 weeks. Patients typically report only mild discomfort, that of a slight to moderate stinging sensation immediately after the sclerotherapy injection or laser pulse. This disappears within a few seconds. There may be occasional, slight bruising around the treatment area.
You should expect to return to normal activities the next day. Most patients experience up to a 75 percent improvement upon completion of treatments.
After Sclerotherapy Treatment:
- Avoid strenuous activity, hot tub baths, saunas, and tanning beds for the first week after the procedure.
- Wear the bandages until the next morning.
- Wear compression stockings daily for one week following the procedure.
After Laser Treatment:
- Refrain from activities that pump blood to the lower legs, such as hiking, biking or treadmill for a couple of days.
- We recommend wearing compression stockings for 48 hours after spider vein laser treatment.
