At Triangle Vein Clinic, we are pleased to offer ClariVein®, a minimally invasive endovascular technique for the corrective treatment of venous reflux disease and varicose veins. ClariVein uniquely combines mechanical agitation and the delivery of a chemical sclerosant to irritate the lining of the vein thereby sealing it. It is useful for treatment of the greater and lesser saphenous veins.
The ClariVein catheter is inserted into the vein using a pin sized entry through the skin. Your physician will numb the injection site, but no additional anesthesia is necessary. The catheter tip is positioned near the saphenofemoral or saphenopopliteal junction. The motorized handle rotates the catheter tip during pullback, creating vessel spasm to block forward flow and concentrate the targeted infusion of liquid sclerosant. During the procedure, you will feel a non-painful ‘buzzing’ in the area being treated. Ultrasound imaging technology will be used during the procedure. Once the vein constricts, the catheter is removed from the vein. We will wrap this area of your leg with compression bandages.
You should expect the procedure to take 45-60 minutes, although we advise our patients to plan to be at Triangle Vein Clinic for an hour and a half. You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure, and you should not drive the rest of the day.
Like most patients, you should see noticeable improvement in your symptoms and appearance following the procedure.
After the procedure:
- The day of the procedure you should walk for 10 minutes every hour until bed time, otherwise keep your leg elevated. Leave the wrappings / bandages in place until the next morning.
- For a month following the procedure you will wear graduated compression stockings.
- For a week following the procedure, avoid vigorous exercise, then resume regular activity.
- Avoid inactivity for a month.
